All About Arms part 1

With Arlyn Zones and Carol Kress

Throughout our lives, our hands have a privileged and profound place in our experience and our sense of self. We begin early in infancy, exploring and discovering ourselves through touch. As we develop we use our hands and arms to discover our external environment and learn to act upon it. For these larger actions in the world the inter-relationships between our hands, arms, shoulders, spine all need to be clarified and optimized. And for powerful forces to be transmitted through these bones we need to learn to initiate movement from the pelvis.

The slightest reduction of effort in the hands can bring a lightness to our entire self. It’s a good place for us to begin. We can then move on to explore and optimize the use of the arms and discover some fascinating connections to other parts of ourselves along the way.

From the Book:

“Feldenkrais’s perceptiveness seemed to defy the limits of our ordinary senses. Feldenkrais could touch a person’s head and feel patterns of muscular contractions in regions remote from where his hands were placed, such as the spine, chest, and pelvis, all the way to the feet; by touching and pressing on the feet, he could feel reactions all the way up to the head….

The principles that belong to Feldenkrais’s method cut across distinctions between war and peace, competition and cooperation, and accurately reflect nature’s underlying order. Such generality, understood as foundational for complexity, is the hallmark of lasting contributions to human knowledge and capabilities.”
